Relationships are established between nonequilibrium thermodynamics and stochastic processes, which contribute to our understanding of the time asymmetry which manifests itself in nonequilibrium systems and their fluctuations. These relationships show the important role played by the second law of thermodynamics even in small systems affected by fluctuations.
